How to Prepare Your Dog for Their First Boarding Stay

Happy dog relaxing in a luxury boarding suite at Dioji K-9 Resort

Leaving your dog at a boarding facility for the first time is a big step. Whether you're heading out on vacation or managing a work trip, knowing that your furry companion is safe, happy, and well-cared-for makes all the difference.

At Dioji K-9 Resort & Athletic Club, we've welcomed thousands of first-time boarders across our four locations. Here's what we've learned about making that first stay a success.

Start With a Daycare Visit

One of the best things you can do is bring your dog in for a daycare session before their overnight stay. This lets them get familiar with the facility, the staff, and the routine without the added stress of being away from home overnight.

Many of our guests start with a free trial daycare day to test the waters. It's a low-pressure way for your dog to explore, make friends, and build confidence in the environment.

Pack Comfort Items From Home

Familiar scents can be incredibly calming. We recommend bringing:

  • A favorite blanket or bed
  • A worn t-shirt that smells like you
  • Their regular food (to avoid digestive upset)
  • A beloved toy (nothing too small or easily destroyed)

"Dogs are creatures of habit. The more familiar their environment feels, the faster they settle in." — Dioji K-9 Resort Team

Keep Your Routine Leading Up to Drop-Off

Dogs pick up on our energy. If you're anxious, they'll feel it. Try to keep your morning routine as normal as possible on the day of drop-off. A calm walk, regular breakfast, and a confident goodbye go a long way.

Make Sure Vaccinations Are Current

For the safety of all our guests, we require up-to-date vaccinations including Rabies, DHLPP, and Bordetella. If you're unsure of your dog's vaccination status, check with your vet a few weeks before the stay.

Communicate Any Special Needs

Does your dog take medication? Have dietary restrictions? Get anxious during thunderstorms? The more we know, the better we can tailor their experience. Our team creates individual care plans for every guest.

Trust the Process

It's completely normal for dogs to take a day to settle in. Most pups are running around with new friends within hours. Our webcams and daily updates help you stay connected without the worry.
